Welcome! The remains of several log cabins can be found about a mile up the
Junco Trail from Meadow Creek Reservoir. This is a popular trailhead well
known to residents of Winter Park, Fraser and Tabernash. The 10,000' high
reservoir is at the end of a long seeming drive on a good logging road.
Keep to your side of the road watch for opposing traffic on the curves.
East of Tabernash, Highway 40 rises over the train tracks. On the Fraser side
of the overpass, you turn east onto Road 83 for half a mile and then switch to Road 84.
There are National Forest signs pointing the way. After winding up for 11.4 miles
on Road 84, you'll be past the reservoir and at the Junco trailhead. For a cool,
early morning start, you can drive up the previous night and use one of the undeveloped
campsites along the reservoir. This virtual hike will take you high up the Caribou Trail.
You begin by taking the easy trail to Columbine Lake for about a mile and a half.
The first part of the path is a very rocky wagon road, so wear good shoes.
You'll see thousands of beautiful Christmas-like trees that have sprouted
in the clearings and several log homes. Enjoy!
