From a distance, much of the landscape looks barren. However,

This was the only difficult part of the ascent, besides
the usual hazard of walking across smaller rocks.
With some effort, I was able to pull myself up with my
hands. The total reach was less than 5 feet. There was
a place for me to hoist myself up to the right of the cleft
shown above. Click on the photo for a first look at the
pool just beyond the cleft.
