There was a large community of crows that would warm up near the
crests and then soar from one high bowl to another (on the same mountain),
apparently, just for pleasure. They were hard to photograph with a digital
camera, but we spent several hours in their company looking down and across
at their flight paths. Often we mistook them for their shadows. Birds were
conscious of their shadows and familiar with their "double" long before
contemporary man strode upon the face of the earth.
