Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Lake. Our route up to here along the
ridge shown along the right. The west portion of Grand Lake Village can
be seen just beyond the ridgeline. Columbine Lake is along the center
of the right edge of the photo above. In the view below, Columbine
Lake is pointed out directly above the tree top. Beyond Columbine Lake
is the southern end of the Winding River Ranch area and Rio Rancho.
The green trees rising in into National Forest across the valley are
the new growth trees from a 500 acre fire that occured in 1980. Directly
beyond those new trees is a hint of the Whiskey Park area, ideal for
snowmobiling in the winter. Further up is Gravel Mountain. At our office,
we have some 11x17 inch prints of the aerial photos to give to customers.

As you can see indirectly, this mountain is one of the most prominent rising
features in Rocky Mountain National Park that one can see from the residential
areas around Grand Lake. Scroll down for close ups of the terrain.
Photo above is looking up towards a rise blocking the view of
the peak of Ptarmigan Mountain. Below is a view looking back
to the pass that we went through.

This is the star of Ptarmigan Mountain: the ptarmigan bird. Three of them
flew out from the rocks at over 12,000 feet as I approached its ridgeline.
I didn't have the camera ready but this fellow settled down and posed
before hiding behind some rocks along the face of a cliff. Click on
the photo to see what is this bird's view directly below.
